Public Works Expansion Project

Fleet Services BuildingThe Public Works Expansion Project began in late June 2019 and affected the Public Works and Parks Facility Buildings, both located on Tower Drive.

The work involved removing the original Public Works Building on the west side of Tower Drive and replacing it with a new 25,000-square-foot facility and a 18,800-square-foot, unheated building now houses the city’s vehicle and equipment fleet and maintenance services. In addition, the Public Works Building on the east side of Tower Drive was remodeled and approximately 53,000 square feet of space added to the structure.

The original Public Works Building on the west side of Tower Drive was constructed in 1967 as the original City Hall and was remodeled three times over the past five decades. The building had reached the end of its useful life, and it was more cost effective to remove it and construct a new building rather than completing another remodel.

With the city’s growth over the past decade, the demand for services and the amount of infrastructure has increased. The expansion is expected to support operations for the next 10 years.

Project Cost and Funding
Construction cost an estimated $23.2 million and was paid for using expiring debt levies from the 2003 Public Works Building expansion and the 2001 Public Safety Building expansion. The existing levies will be reduced to offset the “new” debt levy. The remainder was funded by city reserves, revenues from the water/sewer utility fund and small contributions from other agencies.

Open House
The public open house celebration was planned for summer 2020. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19, the event has been rescheduled. We look forward to sharing the new space with the public soon - in the meantime, learn about the new buildings in teh video tour.
