Park Projects

Updated: January 3, 2013The Parks Division is responsible for the maintenance and development of the parks, trails and open space system throughout the city. Currently, the system consists of approximately 3,200 acres of city-owned property, 130 miles of trails, 63 athletic fields, 38 play structures, 48 court facilities, 40 neighborhood parks, five major open space sites, five community parks and more than 25 miscellaneous park buildings. The division also mows more than 350 acres of park and boulevard turf and maintains more than 12,000 trees within these mowed areas.The 2012 maintenance projects are summarized below.

City staff are in the process of trimming and removing trees at a number of Woodbury locations, including: Evergreen West Park, Garbe Well site, Afton Fire Station, Thames Fire Hall, Victoria Park, Windwood Park, Woodlane Hills and the Public Works site on Tower Drive.The city has contracted out the trimming and removal of trees located at the following parks: Ojibway, Chippewa, Ridgegate, Shawnee, Menomini, Cree, Potawatomi and Odawa.
Reconstruction of several trail segments located in Ojibway Park, Potawatomi Park, Lakeview Knolls Park and a trail segment along Lake Road between Woodlane Drive and Carver Park. Construction will consist of removing the existing payment, sub-grade corrections, new gravel base and pavement.Construction of new trail segments located at Evergreen West Park and the east side of Power Lake.
A new post-tension concrete slab will be constructed in Ojibway Park that will replace the existing asphalt surface hockey rink.
A new trail segment will be constructed connecting the end of Meadow Lane and the existing trail in Cree Park. Construction of a new trail will consist of sub-cutting for the new trail, sub-grade corrections, new gravel base and pavement. A new concrete playground border and picnic table/bench slabs will be construction that will accommodate a new playground.
A new 6" watermain will be extended from Meadow Lane cul-de-sac to Applewood Road. The new watermain pipe will be installed using a directional boring method instead of an open trench method to help minimize tree impacts in the park.
All disturbed areas adjacent to trail construction locations, concrete slabs, playground borders and watermain extensions will be graded smooth with pulverized/screened black dirt.
All city-owned parking lots and all asphalt trails in the NE quadrant of the city will be cracked sealed.
All tennis and basketball courts will be crack sealed using a cold applied elastomeric crack sealant designed for tennis courts.
The 2011 maintenance projects are summarized below.
Each summer, the department plans and implements a parks pavement maintenance project.Construction began June 13, 2011 and is expected to be completed in September, 2011.Work is underway on the trail segment between Birchwood Road/Oakwood Road and the trail leading into Potawatomi Park off Birchwood Road. Paving of these two trails is scheduled for completion early the week of June 19.Beginning the week of June 19, and continuing for a number of weeks, work will be underway on reconstructing all the trails in Odawa Park.

Along with trail segments along Lake Road, Interlachen Parkway, Dancing Waters Parkway and Birchwood Drive. Construction will consist of removing the existing pavement, sub-grade corrections, new gravel base and pavement. Funding for the reconstruction of the various trail segments will come from the Park and Forestry general fund budget.
The north parking lot was removed with construction of the new Public Safety building and will be paved as part of the 2011 Parks Pavement Maintenance Project. Funding for the parking lot will be from the Public Safety Expansion Fund.
A gravel parking lot to accommodate five to seven vehicles will be constructed at the Dale Woods Open Space. The parking lot will be located off Manning Avenue and will include clearing, grubbing, sub-grade correction, geo-textile soil reinforcement fabric and 12 inches of aggregate base. Funding for the parking lot will be from Park Dedication Fee Fund.
The three existing color coated pavement areas near the west and east entrance doors to Central Park and the west entrance to the YMCA will be re-color coated. All existing color coating will be removed, all cracks will be sealed and then two coats each of an acrylic black base coat and dark red final surface paint will be applied. Funding for the Central Park lot coloring will be split evenly between Washington County, the YMCA and the city. The city’s portion will come from the Park and Forestry General Fund.
All city owned parking lots and all asphalt trails in the northwest quadrant of the city will be cracked sealed. Funding for crack sealing will come from the Park and Forestry General Fund.
All tennis and basketball courts will be crack sealed. In addition, the larger cracks on the tennis court at Evergreen West Park will be repaired. This system uses a special tape that bridges the larger cracks. Funding for tennis/basketball crack sealing will come from the Park and Forestry General Fund.
