Mayor Stephens earns Leaders in Local Government Award

Mayor StephensMayor Mary Giuliani Stephens earned the Elected Official of Note Award at the annual Leaders in Local Government Luncheon Sept. 12 in St. Paul.

The award - sponsored by the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce, Woodbury Area Chamber of Commerce, and 11 other East Metro Chamber of Commerce partners - honors four local government organizations and an elected official in the east metro who exemplify and demonstrate innovation, excellence and success in local government.

Stephens was nominated for her regional leadership, serving as co-chair of the Region Council of Mayors, board member with the Woodbury Area Chamber of Commerce, and member of the Metropolitan Council’s regional Transportation Advisory Board.

She also is known as an advocate for entrepreneurialism and is a stakeholder in the Woman Owners of Woodbury, a networking and support group for local women who own their own businesses.

Under her leadership, more than 1.6 million square feet of new commercial space has been constructed in Woodbury the last five years. In addition, more than 300 new businesses opened in Woodbury during the same span.

Stephens has served as Woodbury’s mayor since 2011 and is winding down the last year of her second term as mayor. She is not seeking re-election this fall. Prior to becoming mayor, Stephens spent four years (2007-2010) as a City Council member. She is Woodbury’s first female mayor.

The City of Woodbury Community Development Department was also a finalist for the Communications and Marketing Award at the luncheon. Woodbury was one of three finalists in the category.
